科目概要

この科目は、それぞれの担当教員が持つ専門分野をtriggerに、履修者の関心や専攻の文脈でリサーチ、ディスカッション、プレゼンテーションをする小集団授業である。こうした内容を日本語以外のターゲット言語で実施する。単に知識を深めるだけでなく、多様な背景を持った学生同士の交流からも多くを学ぶ。

1. 自分の領域や専門を超え、複眼的な視点で物事を日本語以外の言語である程度理解し、さらにその言語を用いて自信を持って発信することができる。
2. 日本語以外の言語で、主体的に学ぶ経験をすると共に、主体的に学ぶ方法を身につける。

This course is designed as an introduction to the essentials of law and legal systems. It aims to provide insight into the nature and function of law and familiarize students with key concepts, institutions and processes in various fields of law, such as constitutional law, criminal law, procedural law, property law, contracts and torts. The course seeks to place law in its social, economic, political, historical and philosophical context and thus not only to provide students with a knowledge of legal institutions but also to help them to develop a critical understanding of the operation of those institutions in society. The teaching of the course will take the form of formal lecturing and class discussions. This course will use both/either formative and/or summative evaluation.

This course aims to provide essential historical knowledge of the world for the last 200 years. The period is usually called modern era. The modern era was more or less established by the end of Napoleonic wars in Europe and later spread to the rest of the world. Major characteristics of the modern era will be explained especially in comparison to the medieval era. The course will also trace the evolution and challenges of the modern era. Major ideologies of the modern era such as nationalism, capitalism, democracy, Marxism, and fascism will be described. The causes and effects of major wars and economic depressions will also be discussed. This course will use both/either formative and/or summative evaluation.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to some of the most significant historical and cultural issues and concepts in the complex relationship between Japan and 'the West'. This course aims to challenge students to question taken for granted essentialized binary opposition between Japan and The West and to understand the nature of complex and mutually constitutive relationship between the two. This course uses academic texts, case studies, and visual aids to facilitate students understanding and engagement. This course enableｓ students to engage in theoretically and historical debate about the relationship between Japan and the West. The course consists in a comprehensive survey of the intimate relationship between the city of Kyoto and the birth and development of Japanese art and culture. Beginning with the circumstances which led to the foundation in the Kyoto basin of an everlasting capital, the course puts a special emphasis on the history of civil and religious architecture, introduces the performing arts of the various eras (noh, kyogen, kabuki), examines the culture of the tea ceremony and tells the story of the glory and decline of the period movie and its industry. Students will be asked to make oral presentations, thus increasing their ability to convey their ideas in the English language. This course will use both/either formative and/or summative evaluation.

This course introduces students to the study of language. The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding about contemporary linguistics through subjects such as the origin and properties of language, the differences and similarities between animal and human communication, the properties of grammar, the types of language acquisition, as well as the relationship between language and culture. By giving ample examples from various languages, the centric focus of the course is on how reality is perceived and reflected in language, and also on how language and thinking are related to each other. The course is basically a lecture course, but there is also space for both open and group discussion in the class in order to promote a student-led learning process. This course will use both/either formative and/or summative evaluation.

This course will introduce students to the central topics, concepts and methods of socio-cultural anthropology, which can be broadly defined as the study of human cultures and societies. It will survey the key topics in contemporary socio-cultural anthropology and offer insights into how the seemingly most commonsensical aspects of people’s lives can be informed by the social contexts of which they consider themselves a part.　The course focuses on anthropological theories, thus also providing a historical overview of the discipline. It draws on ethnographic examples and case studies from various societies, but contemporary Japan will be central, in order to provide students with an understanding of where we are living. Active participation in discussion will be fundamental.This course will use both/either formative and/or summative evaluation.

How do people create their world, their environment, traditions and heritage? How are they in turn created by them? This course looks at the contemporary world through the lens of human culture and provides an introductory overview of cross-disciplinary approaches to social issues and global problems with a base in the humanities, including, but not restricted to, geography, history, languages and linguistics, philosophy and the arts. In order to draw on students’ diverse experience and knowledge, this course combines lecture-based elements with interactive teaching styles such as group discussions, presentation and seminars. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the United Nations’(UN) history, functions, structures, and contemporary challenges. By studying for this course, students should be able to understand the key concepts related to the UN and to apply these insights to contemporary international affairs. The course traces the development of the UN and its ‘practices’ within international politics. The course will consist of small group and class discussion. This course reviews a wide range of theories exploring the nature and causes of conflict, the possibilities for conflict resolution, and the foundations of peace. The course will combine lecture and group work, exploring from past to contemporary case studies, so that it will help students to foster practical understandings of the cause of conflicts and discuss ways to resolve current global issues. At completion, students will possess an understanding of the key concepts of peace studies and a broad knowledge of different perspectives on peace and conflict and develop skills to address personal and group issues that require peaceful conflict transformation currently and in the future. This course explores gendering processes in everyday social life and in identity dynamics within global society. It draws on a range of feminist perspectives in gender studies. Students will engage in debate and discussion to deepen their understanding of mini-lectures and of academic reading content. They will also engage in simulation activities and research projects. They will develop the capability to challenge mainstream discourses on femininities and masculinities and to evaluate policies in terms of gender equality. Students will be able to analyze a wide range of gender issues from terdisciplinary and global perspectives. They will be able to critically examine the influences of gender in the construction of personal identities and national identities in policy documents, news media, entertainment media, and in the academy. 本科目では、現在の計算機システムが至るところに存在するようになるきっかけとなった重要な進歩について、次の3つを取り上げて紹介します。1）そろばんのような機械式計算機や浮動小数点演算装置からマイコンやデスクトップコンピュータへ発展したハードウェアの進歩。2）パンチカードからクラウド型システムへのデータ処理の進化。3）プログラミング言語の進化。また、発見や発明につながった歴史的人物や情勢について、現在知られているコンピュータデバイスの利用を形成した進歩や出来事に触れて紹介します。さらに、電子メイルやWWW等、電子的メッセージングシステムの進化についても触れます。

学生が日常生活で利用されている計算機システムの進化をマイクロコンピューター、データプロセッシング、プログラミング言語の3つの柱で深い理解ができるようになることを目指します。この3つの歴史的な進歩で、同時に進化してきた出来事の元を理解し、将来の発達を進めていける知識を修得します。

この科目は、日本において特徴的に誕生し、その後広く世界的にも広がってきた「デジタル・アーカイブ」の考え方、技術的方法、具体的な事例を理解し、さらに今後の課題について学びます。デジタル・アーカイブは、高度に発達した現代のマルチメディア情報処理技術を、歴史、文化、芸術分野を中心とする人文科学研究へ応用する考え方です。また、世界中の国々の歴史・文化・芸術についての情報を、研究者だけでなく一般の人々へも広く発信することにより、相互理解を深めるという、きわめてグローバルで現代的な課題です。

この科目では「ことばの理解」をテーマとして様々なトピックを扱い、日頃意識することなく使っている「ことば」と「理解（すること）」を俎上に載せ、ひいては「コミュニケーション」に関する洞察を深めます。

この科目では、世界における教育目的でのコンピュータ利用の実態を分析します。コンピュータの導入により、教室内での指導、学習者、および学習経験がいかに変容したか、検討し、教育現場でのコンピュータ利用の未来を描きます。

政治とは力であり、政治家、政党、マスメディアがメッセージを発する際に用いることばは多くの人々の意見・見解に直接的に影響を及ぼします。この科目ではマスメディアを含むオピニオンリーダー達が用いる言語を分析し、言葉の使われ方によって大衆の指向性がどのように決定づけられているかについて検討します。

This course overviews the basics of climate change and global warming issues by reviewing the scientific analyses of UN reports and international efforts through following UNFCCC documents. We will look into the measures and other frameworks to address the challenges, including the basic structure of emissions trading. We will also examine the history of international agreements and study the backgrounds of the difficulties in the negotiations.

It will also enable students to obtain basic knowledge about policies, principal measures and international frameworks to cope with the global challenges. The course starts with outlining the impacts of globalization and illustrates the development of international project as the example of the outcomes of globalization. It will examine the aspects of international project development by focusing on the infrastructure needs, basic structures, skills needed including engineering technology, risks, economics and related policies. We will look at the meaning of food in different cultures by exploring how factors like ethnicity, gender, religion, and socio-economic status influence our food choices. We will also examine the various ways in which state policies and ideologies, business strategies and global processes relate to our food ways and preferences.

This course will conduct group-based research and discussions on selected Policy Science topics related to social, economic, cultural, and political issues of Japan and overseas countries. Each group is formed by international and Japanese students, and English will be used as the main instruction and communication language in the class. Students are expected to engage in constructive discussions based on different cultural backgrounds and experiences.

Play is a ubiquitous phenomenon we find in our everyday life. Oftentimes, play and playfulness are understood in contrast to the seriousness of life and the demands of work. Children are allowed to play all the time but not adults. But is this the whole story? Isn’t play central in understanding human beings as human beings? Isn’t it essential for the well-being of not just children but human beings in general? In this course, we explore the significance of play and playfulness in human life by examining how various thinkers in the east and west have reflected on the topic. The course invites students to not just theoretically engage with play, but to actively play with playfulness.

The primary goal of this course is to critically reflect on the role of play and playfulness in understanding the nature of human beings. By examining various ideas of play throughout the history of western and eastern traditions, students will be able to reconsider our common conception of play as a marginalized phenomenon and reflect on various social and cultural problems that derive from downplaying the importance of play and playfulness. Furthermore, by actively playing with the topic, students will gain a firsthand understanding of why and how play and playfulness are invaluable for human beings, especially in our society today.

This course is a theoretical and applied investigation of issues in global justice. Traditionally, justice has been theorized in terms of the obligations that exist between citizens and the state. Global justice by contrast is the study of what individuals are owed as they are affected by activities and relationships that cross state lines and which cannot be resolved by states alone or independently of non-state agents and institutions. The course will investigate different frameworks of global justice and how they apply to major global issues. Topics for discussion may include poverty and economic disparity; humanitarian intervention and universal human rights; environmentalism and climate change; immigration and citizenship; and national and cosmopolitan democracy.

Upon completion of this course students should be able to discuss central topics in global justice by means of a variety of theoretical frameworks. They should be able to evaluate different arguments about global issues and have developed more reasoned positions on these issues. Students should also have developed their ability to identify, analyze, and criticize philosophical arguments, and have developed their understanding of diverse issues of philosophical inquiry. They should have also developed their ability to communicate their ideas in a clear and cogent manner.

The 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the UN will be introduced. Each goal will be briefly discussed in a global context. Specific target for each goal will be examined to understand their underlying causes. Solution to the global issue that is attached to each target will be deliberated in the class, with the emphasis on climate change. Integrated approach to solve the global issues across the different fields will be highlighted, focusing on the water-agriculture-energy nexus.

The course will expose students to different SDG’s. It will allow students to weigh the different approaches in attaining sustainable development of various SDG’s targets. The student will develop a strong social and technological awareness that will help them become a responsible global citizen.

この科目は、自分の中にある先入観や偏見に気付き、ステレオタイプにとらわれることなく、異文化を理解しようとする姿勢を培うことを目的とします。言語、政治、開発、ジェンダー、グローバリゼーション、多文化共生などの現代社会の課題を取り上げます。海外長期滞在経験者や留学から帰国した学生の受講を推奨し、国際的なキャリアを目指す学生、大学院進学を目指す学生、SKP生などの短期留学生や正規留学生をも対象とします。

1. 受講生が、人文・社会とかかわるテーマを扱った英語の学術文献・論文を読み、議論します。正規留学生およびSKP生などの短期留学生も対象とします。国内学生と国際学生の学び合いが可能な環境で、留学生においては日本人学生と学びあえる授業となり、留学を目指す学生に関しては留学先の授業環境に適応する機会ともなります。受講生の人数に応じて、レベル別クラス実施も検討します。

1. 学生が英語などの講義を通して、人文・社会とかかわる幅広い教養を身につけます。
2. 学生が人文・社会とかかわるテーマを扱った英語の学術文献・論文を読み、議論できること。議論をふまえてタームペーパーを執筆できるレベルを目指します。

本科目は、コミュニケーションの分野で最も基礎的、実践的、且つ有益なテーマを学際的・複合的なアプローチで検討するものであり、基礎理論の解説とマルチメデイア教材を利用した実践を通して、コミュニケーションに関する理解を高めます。

学生自身の自（異）文化理解力をより一層高めながら、非言語コミュニケーションについての基礎的な知識を修得します。また、文化相互主義に基づくグローカルな視点に立つ人間観・世界観の構築を図ります。

科目概要

主にモチベーション向上型（1セメスター期間程度）の留学を希望する学生を対象とした留学準備科目です。

1. 海外留学の意義や海外の高等教育事情を学びます。
2. 留学先で必要となる基礎的な学習スキル学びます。例えば、ライティング、リーディング、スピーキング、リスニングの4技能に加え、シラバスの読み方、オフィス・アワーの活用方法など。
3. 留学準備に欠かせない語学検定スコア準備を行います。

到達目標

1. 学生が海外留学の意義や海外の高等教育事情を学ぶことで留学への動機を明確にします。
2. 学生が留学先で必要となる基礎的な学習スキルを身につけます。
3. 学生が留学準備に欠かせないTOEFL iBT® やIELTSへの準備を行います。

主にアドバンスト型留学（8か月から1年間の長期留学）を目指す学生や、派遣が決まった学生を対象とした留学準備科目です。

1. 留学先で必要不可欠となる総合的な学習スキルを学びます。例えば、学術文献・論文の検索方法、タームペーパーの執筆方法など。
2. 海外大学での授業を受講する際のディスカッションの方法、プレゼンテーションの方法などを学びます。
3. TOEFL iBT®やIELTSの準備を行います。

到達目標

1. 学生が留学先で必要不可欠となる総合的な学習スキルを獲得します。
2. 学生が留学先の「教室文化」への適応力を身につけます。例えば、ディスカッションの方法、プレゼンテーションの方法など。
3. 学生がTOEFL iBT® やIELTSの準備を行います。

科目概要

本科目は、学内での事前研修、海外での体験型研修、事後研修の3つのパートから構成される海外留学プログラムである。以下の3点を柱としてプログラムを実施する。

1. 異文化理解
   派遣先大学において、多様な背景の学生たちと共同で生活し、学び、意見を交わし、発表することに通して、違いや共通点を見出し、さらに受容や相互理解の重要性を学ぶ。
2. コミュニケーション能力
   派遣予定先が日本と同様に英語を第2言語とする国にすることから、共通の土壌でコミュニケーションの手段として英語を用い、意思の疎通をはかり、自分の意見を発信できるようになる。
3. 技術者理解
   現地における日本に関係する企業を訪問し、日本技術の海外生産現場を見学し、現場の技術者から話を聞くことで、国境を越えて働く技術者についての理解を深める。

科目概要

学内での事前研修で、ハワイにまつわる科学技術や自然環境に関する講義を聴き、各自、現地での課題消化に備えた準備をする。ハワイ大学では、本プログラムのために特別に用意された理工系の内容の講座やハワイの文化に関する講座、そして、英語学習の講座を受講する。その中で各自が見つけたテーマに関してPowerPointを使ったプレゼンテーションをする。その他、各種フィールド･トリップやハワイ大学の学生との交流など、様々な企画が用意されている。帰国後、各自がプログラムの成果についてポスター･プレゼンテーションする。
